National Woman's Day 9 August 2006

A Grannies' tea was held to commemorate this important day on our calendar which pays tribute to those women who marched in Pretoria in 1956 to protest the Pass Laws.  Over 100 grannies from the area enjoyed tea, cake, dancing and singing.  Guest speakers included Mrs Cynthia Shezi who spoke on abuse and many of the challenges facing women in the community today and Russell Chili from Focus on the Family who spoke on abstinence and the importance of allowing teenagers to be taught about the facts of life from reliable sources rather than from the media and friends.

Timu Kota Visit - August 2006

We had the pleasure of hosting a group of young people from the Netherlands called "Timu Kota"  - Swahili for Dream Dare Do.  Their mission is to empower dreams and their aim was to share their talents with young people from all sectors in South Africa.  They spent 2 weeks in Kwa Ngcolosi imparting their knowledge on art, singing, drama, photography and sports.  The highlight of the visit was the recording of a CD featuring a group of unemployed youth from the area.  They have been greatly encouraged by this feat as well as from other self-esteem programmes which were undertaken.  Timu Kota sponsored an experienced wireworker to share his craft with some unemployed Youth at the Sethani Centre.  They will continue to make small items to sell either as a group or individually.

July 2006 - Fun Run

On 1 July a Youth Awareness Day was held.  It started with a Fun Run - a 9km circular route along the road. There were 50 participants and it was run with a lot of enthusiasm.  Most of the runners were barefoot - including the second runner home and we are planning to find sponsors for the top 5 runners who displayed the potential to achieve well with training and proper equipment.  Thereafter there were motivational speakers, dramas and poems covering issues such as Drug Abuse, Abstinence, importance of education etc.  It was a great team effort from the Youth organisers and the Sethani Staff.

Computer courses

40 young people have completed the Basic Computer training course.  This has provided huge motivation to the unemployed youth and there is a waiting list of 50 for the next round of courses to begin after the holidays in August.  The Centre is now equipped with 4 new computers and software.

Durban Girls College Visit - May 2006

Members of the Committee of the Oak Tree Seed Group at Durban Girls College visited the Sethani Resource Centre recently.  They brought some much-needed books to add to the library as well as the "Colour me: Zulu" series of educational books - pages of easy Zulu vocabulary, translated into English and illustrated.  These books were sponsored by individual girls and donated to the library.  They have been well-received and enjoyed by the children in KwaNgcolosi.

Beadwork group

A beadwork group has started and the ladies have been very excited to receive two orders to make home decor items for a small business in Hillcrest.  It is encouraging for the unemployed women to be able to earn their own money and we hope this venture will continue to grow.
